How to get through the 'ugly' stage in your art? Take a deep breath and keep working. It is essential to trust the process and your intuition. It's better to create more imperfect pieces than to have tons of unfinished, could-have-been-perfect works collecting dust and reminding you of your failure.

Over time, we get better at trusting our decisions and making them a reality. It's exactly the same with life — the more you do something, the more you learn and the more you know how to do it.

I think it really applies to learning a new language. My journey with English is a lifelong process. At the beginning, progress was very slow. Years later, I can speak fluently. Yes, I make mistakes. Yes, sometimes I say stupid things without thinking that they might sound different than what I actually meant. But when you focus on communication rather than the language itself, it becomes a tool, not the end goal. Same with art.

Number one advice for all watercolor artists? Always keep your drink on the other side of the table than your painting water. It's a matter of habit, but it might save your health - if you are using high quality artist grade watercolors, they might contain heavy metals so you don't want to risk drinking from the same cup. I've seen so many "funny" videos of artists dipping their brush in their drink. So just a warning, better stay careful.

I like using big glass jars for my painting water so it doesn't get too dirty too soon. Keep it close to your watercolor palette so you don't have to move the wet brush back and forth above the painting.

Have a little bottle spray to wet your colors.
✷
Keep some paper towels handy and use a tea towel to remove the excess of water from your brush.
✷

Watercolor is a challenging medium, but once you get a grip of the foundation techniques, it becomes a real pleasure to work with. It's like this friend that was unavailable at the beginning, but once they warmed up and opened up to you, you became best friends. At least that's what it was for me. Now it's one of my favourite mediums. 😊

When I started with watercolors, I struggled, even though I already knew how to paint quite okay. However, working with painting mediums based on arabic gum require a specific approach. After two years of practice, I could say I mastered it enough that I started teaching others how to enjoy painting with watercolors.

Are you ready to paint? No? Hear me out then. I used to be a blocked artist. I struggled with making work, I wasn't creating until inspiration came to me. It was a very disappointing life. I had to do something about it.

I started reading about prolific artists and what inspired them. It turns out that what connects all of them, is the fact that they were not waiting for inspiration to come to them. They were actively working on creating inspiration and making work. But how can you do that?
✷
1) write a journal - my number one advice for artists of all kinds. Writing down your thoughts will help you to get into the core of why you are or want to be more creative. You may realize that what is actually blocking you is not a lack of ideas, but lack of rest/movement, low self esteem, anxiety, depression.
✷
2) start a notebook - writing down your inspiration when it comes to you is crucial. It's like a bird that sits down on your shoulder, it will fly away sooner or later. Better make a mental note of it, cause you might not remember its colours once it's gone.
✷
3) make ugly art - let yourself to experiment, play, have fun, be angry, be disappointed. My sketchbook is my space for making ugly art. It helps me to decrease the fear of making mistakes, find new ways of using certain tools and get things on paper without pressure of making something beautiful.
✷
4) surround yourself with beauty - it doesn't mean you should go and spend your paycheck on expensive stuff. Go for a walk, collect plants. Go to the library. Start a moodboard with things that might inspire you. Read a book. Print faces of your favourite artists. Turn on the music. Being surrounded by art, makes us inspired!

5) exercise - I can express enough how many times a walk, run, hike or yoga has inspired me to create something. Movement is a natural way of getting getting more hormones of happiness into our system. Do 5, 10, 20 minutes. Keep it simple.

Last night I finally went to the @wakatipu_potters_group studio as a new member! 🥰

I'm starting a series of watercolor palettes in shapes inspired by botanicals, animals and nature. On my first visit to the studio I made this pomegranate palette. Now I'm praying to clay gods for successful drying and firing 🙌😅

I'm so excited about this as ceramics was my favourite subject in high school. I've been sculpting in clay almost every week since I was thirteen. So it's been a huge part of my creative endeavors and I missed it a lot. Now I'm back with new skills and I have so many ideas to bring to reality. 🤗
